Why ANZBCPS?

It is an AHPRA requirement that as surgeons, we continue with professional development (CPD) to ensure that we stay up to date with the latest surgical techniques and technology, and relevant safety and ethical practice standards. As surgeons, we utilise the CPD requirements set by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). This requirement, however, is not specific to ongoing education in cosmetic plastic surgery.  As mandated by the new Guidelines for Medical Practitioners Who Practice Cosmetic Surgery from AHPRA:

9.3 All medical practitioners must participate regularly in continuing professional development (CPD) that is relevant to their scope of practice.

All medical practitioners whose scope of practice includes cosmetic surgery must undertake CPD that includes activities related to cosmetic surgery, including reviewing their performance and measuring their outcomes.

The ANZBCPS is an initiative to improve public awareness of standards in cosmetic surgery and recognition of plastic surgeons who are committed to ongoing education and training in cosmetic plastic surgery. The Board will certify plastic surgeons who have completed this specific requirement for cosmetic plastic surgery, allowing the public to identify fully qualified plastic surgeons who are current, active and compliant with regulation standards.

Dr Naveen Somia – ANZBCPS Board Certified Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon & Specialist Plastic Surgeon (MED0001189889)

What CPD would I need to complete for ANZBCPS Board Certification?

To be Board Certified with ANZBCPS, a component of your RACS CPD requirement must be specific to cosmetic surgery. Part of ANZBCPS’ role will also be to recommend accredited cosmetic surgery learning activities which can contribute to your Board Certification. There will be a minimum activity requirement set for each year. Thus, for ANZBCPS Board Certification, there are two requirements:

RACS as your CPD Home - RACS

To qualify for certification, you will need to choose RACS as your CPD Home. This is to ensure that your CPD requirements are relevant for surgeons and meet AHPRA’s registration criteria.

The RACS CPD program is based on a continuous cycle of learning every twelve (12) months, with focus on planning, participation, measuring outcomes, reflection and change.

Cosmetic surgery specific CPD activities

Your cosmetic surgery specific CPD activities will need to fulfil each of the three CPD Domains as described by the RACS:

Once the above CPD criteria are met, ANZBCPS will then issue ‘Board Certification’ certificate and digital accreditation badge. You will also be listed on our website as an ANZBCPS Board Certified cosmetic plastic surgeon.

How do I obtain my ANZBCPS Board Certification?

You will need to ensure that you satisfy all eligibility criteria above. Complete your RACS CPD requirements, making sure that within this requirement, you have completed learning activities specific to cosmetic surgery as prescribed by the Board. Submit your proof of completion for both components to the Board’s office to receive your certification.

What activities does ANZBCPS provide?

ANZBCPS is not a CPD provider and therefore does not offer any CPD activities. However, the Board will assess, recommend and accredit learning activities that are specific to cosmetic surgery.

The Board endorses learning activities provided by its parent body, Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS), who is a provider of cosmetic surgery education and provides cosmetic surgery learning events. These cosmetic-surgery specific CPD activities will be part of the Board prescribed criteria.

Activities specific to cosmetic surgery provided by other organisers or education providers may be considered and/or recommended as part of approved CPD activities by the board. Please contact the Board to find out more

CPD Frequently Asked Questions

No. There are no providers, mechanisms or programs that facilitate the fulfilment of cosmetic surgery specific CPD for registered specialist plastic surgeons.

AHPRA guidelines that came into effect on the 1st of July 2023, emphasises ongoing participation in professional development that goes beyond the traditional didactic model of learning but remains relevant to their scope of practice.

The recently published AHPRA cosmetic surgery guidelines states:

9.3 All medical practitioners must participate regularly in continuing professional development (CPD) that is relevant to their scope of practice.

All medical practitioners whose scope of practice includes cosmetic surgery must undertake CPD that includes activities related to cosmetic surgery, including reviewing their performance and measuring their outcomes.

MCNZ’s expectation of training, skill and expertise states:
Good medical practice outlines the duties and responsibilities of a doctor registered with the Medical Council. This states that “In providing care you must recognise and work within the limits of your competence.

A cosmetic procedure must therefore only be provided if you have the required training, expertise and experience in the particular procedure being performed to deal with all routine aspects of care and any likely complications.

You are responsible for ensuring that you have the necessary training, expertise and experience to perform a particular cosmetic procedure with reasonable care and skill.

There are two aspects to a plastic surgeon’s competency in cosmetic plastic surgery:

  1. Surgical competency is acquired during specialist training that usually lasts 5 years. However maintaining surgical competency has to be done for 35 years to stay abreast of new advances.

  2. Ongoing CPD (Continuous Professional Development) will ensure that the Plastic Surgeon stays abreast of new advances to provide best in class, ethical and evidence based cosmetic plastic surgical care to patients.

The entry criteria for certification by the ANZBCPS is rigorous. This is to ensure the quality of standard required for the best clinical care and safety in cosmetic surgery. The board is designed to ensure that only fully qualified and committed plastic surgeons are eligible for certification. These criteria reflect the board’s dedication to patient safety and promotion of excellence in cosmetic surgery.

The mandatory criteria are:

  1. AHPRA or MCNZ registration as a specialist in the recognised speciality of plastic surgery
  2. Completion of AMC accredited training in plastic surgery
  3. FRACS qualification
  4. Active practice in cosmetic plastic surgery
  5. Membership of ASAPS, ASPS or NZAPS
Peer Review with recommendations from a proposer and seconder (both must be current members of ASAPS, ASPS or NZAPS) on the following:
    a) Ethical and legal standing
    b) Patient outcomes and safety
    c) Continuing certification
    d) Collegiate behaviour
  6. The Board of ASAPS reserves the right to refuse membership

Upon Board Certification you will be provided with a certificate and a digital accreditation badge. This badge can be displayed across all online assets such as website, email signature, social media profiles, as well as offline assets such as clinic signage and printed marketing material.
